Otion

Introduction

A platform that allows the public to register for events organized by PT. Cyberindo Aditama

My Role

For my bachelor's final project, my responsibilities included collaborating closely with stakeholders to synthesize user requirements, communicating design recommendations, prioritizing outcomes, leading the end-to-end design process, and developing a functional Android mobile application and CMS Web Admin.

Timeline

Aug 2017 - Jan 2018 (6 months)

Tools

Design: Figma, Adobe Photoshop
Development: Android Studio, Firebase, HTML5

Project Requirement Scope

Working with the COO, we defined the project goals of Otion to gain a clearer understanding of its aims and target audience. This ensured that our objectives were aligned with the needs of our users and the strategic vision of the company.

Validating with users

User research results &
findings

We conducted a survey study with 56 participants to understand how users search for events, evaluate their opinions on current event-searching apps, and identify user habits related to technology. Here are the results:

62%

of the survey takers love attending events

However, 71% of them find it difficult to obtain event information. They typically search for event details through social media, web searches, emails, word-of-mouth from friends and family, and various forms of advertising such as banners and posters.

80%

of survey takers are dissatisfied with current event search applications

The dissatisfaction stems from the fact that 94% of them value networking highly. They need more than just a standard event registration app; they seek a platform that allows them to meet new people and share event activities within the app.

Defining target audiences

Framing problem statements for our different levels of end-users

The distinct requirements of two personas influenced the strategic direction of Otion's feature development, guiding the platform's focus tailored to their respective needs.

Naturally, this also leads to 2 different but closely connected objectives to consider in our ideation phase.

HMW empower event managers to streamline their event planning and execution processes efficiently?

HMW provide attendees with a seamless event experience from registration to participation?

User flow

A product flow involving both end-users, with Otion empowering the end-to-end journey

To ensure Otion delivers a complete, seamless, and robust experience, it was essential to identify and address the touchpoints that enable users to complete their goals.

Information Architecture

Structured approach of organizing content

With these core features in mind, I conducted a card sort to understand how users expect the content to be organized and displayed. The results were then used to create an effective sitemap.

Wireframe

After some initial sketches, I developed mid-fidelity wireframes to design and test the interactions and flows of the entire app. The following illustrates the mobile version of the application.

Brand Guidelines

Creating a unified brand identity with a consistent color scheme

Following the company's primary color, blue, we incorporated it as the main color throughout the platform to create a unified and recognizable brand identity. This consistent use of blue helps to reinforce brand recognition, evoke a sense of trust and professionalism, and ensure visual harmony across all touchpoints. By adhering to this color scheme, we aimed to strengthen the brand's presence and make it instantly identifiable to users.

Hi-Fi Design

Desktop Solutions

For the CMS tailored to event managers, I integrated essential event management features. These include creating events, editing event details, adding agendas, assigning speakers, incorporating sponsors, viewing participants, and much more. This comprehensive toolset ensures event managers have all the functionalities they need to efficiently oversee and coordinate their events from a desktop interface.

Hi-Fi Design

Mobile Solutions

As a participant, users can seamlessly view event details, check the agenda, fill out surveys, view exhibitors, participate in polls, see other attendees, and access keynote presentations and other shared files.

When participants register and create their profile, their public data is displayed in the form of a digital business card. At the event, they can easily exchange information by scanning each other's digital business cards within the app, eliminating the hassle of forgetting or losing physical business cards.

Design Validation

User Acceptance Testing

I conducted tests with three individuals from different divisions to gain better perspectives. I began by planning the testing scenarios, including success criteria, steps, and expected results for each feature. The results showed a 98% success rate, indicating a high level of design robustness.

Key Learnings & Impact

Lessons learned, and where we go from here

Given more time, I would focus more on design testing, as the tests I conducted were more technically focused, prioritizing user task completion.

The impact is significant, as the app was directly used internally to host company events right after I delivered the project. My project scope concluded after the testing phase, so I don't have metrics on user engagement or performance, but I am satisfied with completing it within a tight timeline.
